West Bloomfield School District Statement – Support Services for Students & Families Mourning Loss of Student in Home Fire

WEST BLOOMFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear West Bloomfield School District Families,

It is with a heavy heart and tremendous sadness that we share that a WBHS junior was fatally injured in a house fire last night (2/2/2025) along with two siblings who attended schools outside our district. At this time, the accident is an ongoing investigation, and the names of the individuals involved have not yet been released.

A tragedy like this impacts all of us differently and the grief we feel can manifest in many ways. Sometimes, a traumatic incident can trigger past losses. It is okay to acknowledge these. This link contains valuable information that you can use as you discuss this tragedy with your child(ren). During difficult times, we remind students it can be helpful to connect with an adult they trust. We have arranged for our WBSD mental health team, and mental health support from other schools in the district, to be available to our students and staff. They will be available to support students on a drop-in basis in the counseling office during the school day throughout the week.

We ask families to share this news, if appropriate, with their student(s) this evening and make them aware that support will be available. Staff will be on alert and ready to assist students as needed. We will work with the family and honor their wishes.

As our Laker family faces this loss, you may find that you or your child(ren) need additional professional guidance. If you would like to speak to or have your child(ren) speak directly to one of these professionals during the school week, please call 248-865-6720.

One of the best ways we can help our children is to acknowledge their feelings as an active listener and maintain daily routines while supporting their grieving process.  We encourage you to follow your normal routine at home as well.  If you notice that your child(ren), or any others, need additional support, please inform their counselor or any mental health staff.

During this difficult time, it is important that we come together as a community and support the family involved and one another. The most important thing we can do is love our kids and one another.

Hug your loved ones and let them know you are there for them.

Sincerely,

With heavy hearts,

Superintendent Dania Bazzi and Principal Eric Pace
